Please note the Business and Law Examination is required for ALL Contractor licenses.  

A Major Contractor License is required in Connecticut when a job will exceed the following limits:

• Institutional Facilities that have 150 beds or persons
• Residential Structures that are a 200 room single structure hotel or motel
• Storage Structures that hold 1,000 cars or are 250,000 square feet for parking structures

Credit references are required from both a trade source and a financial institution.

A Major Contractor can perform all construction of residential, commercial, and institutional constructional and contracting for the construction of the work.  This license excludes HVAC, Plumbing, and electrical work.

To obtain this license, an applicant must pass the Connecticut Business and Law Exam. 

• The Connecticut Business and Law Exam has 50 questions and a time limit of 2 hours.
• A 70% is required to pass.
• Topics on the exam include licensing; estimating and bidding; lien law; financial management; tax laws; labor laws; project management; contracts; risk management; and environment and safety.
